Eschenberg Observatory

Winterthur
On the Eschenberg the stars are within your reach: since 1979 an observatory equipped with the latest telescopes has been located here. A visit to the observatory is a multi-media experience.

Since 1979 the Sternwarte Eschenberg has reached for the stars from a clearing south of Winterthur. As an official establishment of the local Astronomical Association the widely known observatory receives around 2'000 people annually.

Under its sliding gabled roof the unimposing building contains two telescopes of the latest design. Thanks to these the universe comes within our reach: they let us distinguish the moon's surface furrowed with craters, the levitating rings of Saturn, the prominent crescent of the evening star or the army of millions of stars in the Milky Way. Should rearing clouds blur the view in the middle of a guided tour, it is no disaster: with colourful slides and amazing computer simulations Winterthur's astronomers conjure the wonders of the heavens into the lecture theatre of the observatory.

On special occasions the Winterthur observatory extends its invitation to special guided tours at short notice. You can combine the visit to the observatory with an evening detour to the nearby » Bruderhaus Wildlife Park or a leisurely walk.
