Wine Region Winterthur
Those who would like to explore the abundance of different varieties of Winterthur wines should - ideally together with dear friends - go on a wine-tasting tour through the wine cellars. Winterthur Tourismus organises wine-tastings for groups of 10 or more people. We will promise you this: you can look forward to a few wines, which will surprise you.
It is not without good reason that several wines are grown in the hillside vineyards of this region, which can by all means compete with the big wines from Burgundy, the Alsace or Germany. The times when wine was pressed mainly for quantity are long gone - today the focus is on quality. Although the harvest yield is reduced by thinning out the grapes, the concentration of sugar, flavourings and ingredients is increased. In addition the choice of the grape varieties is geared to the location and soil and the grapes to be harvested are carefully selected and painstakingly pressed. The results are elegant, rich specialities, which - besides the popular, fresh and fruity aperitif and summer wines - can be found in the wine cellars all around Winterthur in a pleasantly increasing number.
The » Weinbauverein Winterthurer Weinland (Winegrowers' Asociation of Winterthur Weinland) is the oldest in the entire canton. However, it is considered as one of the most progressive at the same time and counts some of the most innovative people in the Swiss viticultural scene among its members. Thus, Winterthur offers a real variety of wines to gourmets, which is hard to find elsewhere in such a confined space. Here are a few particular specialities, which you can enjoy during a wine-tasting.
