Museum Briner and Kern
The collections by the gentlemen Briner and Kern left to the City of Winterthur are united in this small, exquisite museum in the town hall. The focus is on 17th century Dutch painting and miniature portraits.
In 1967 Jakob Briner donated a collection of paintings by old masters from the Renaissance to Classicism to his hometown and ensured its further extension. It focuses on Dutch art of the 17th century with historical paintings of biblical scenes, portraits, everyday scenes, landscapes and still life.
In 1998 the miniature portrait collection Emil S. Kern was donated to the City of Winterthur. More than 500 works provide a significant overview of the European art of portraiture from 16th to 19th century. Miniature portraits are tiny portraits often worn as jewellery by the ladies of society. They were intended to bear special events such as births or weddings or the deceased in remembrance. These miniatures often constitute hidden treasures in other museums; in the Museum Briner and Kern they are the focus of interest.
