Villa Flora
For decades a visit to Villa Flora was a privilege, which was reserved only for the family of the owners and a close circle of friends. Thanks to private initiative by descendants of the collector couple Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser-Bühler, Villa Flora has been open to the public since 1995. Discover artistic highlights and typical home decor of the middle classes around the turn of the 20th century.
Between 1907 and 1930 Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser established an exceptionally superior collection of Swiss and French art. In doing so they focused on a select circle of painters and sculptors. At the centre were the Post-Impressionist painters, in particular the Nabis group of artists with Vallotton, Bonnard or Vuillard and that of the Fauves with Matisse as its most famous representative. They complemented their collection with works by Cézanne and Van Gogh, who are considered to be the Fathers of Modernism, and with those of the Swiss artists Giovanni Giacometti and Ferdinand Hodler.
Today the treasure trove of paintings owned by the Hahnlosers is exhibited in changing exhibitions, organised by the Trägerverein Flora (supporting association), in invariably new, appealing contexts. With its authentic ambiance and secluded garden Villa Flora, embellished by the museum architects Rittmeyer and Furrer, contributes to the pure enjoyment of art. In addition to the exhibitions public guided tours, family Sundays and topical events are on offer and Villa Flora is open to private groups even outside of normal opening hours.
