Carnival
The big Sunday procession, which always beckons a great number of spectators to the alleys of the Old Town, is definitely at the centre of the Winterthur Fasnacht. However, the "Hammenschmaus" (ham feast), the "Narrenbaum" (fools' tree) and the burning of the "Böögg" (snowman) are also part of it.
The Winterthur Carnival looks back at a long history: already in the 15th and 16th century the carnival days were celebrated in big style. Since 1939 the event has been organised by the Fasnachtskomitee Winterthur (Winterthur Carnival Committee). Over the course of three carnival days around 3'000 active participants provide for a spectacle, which is followed by around 50'000 visitors.
